On October 16, 2025, 83-year-old Senate veteran Mitch McConnell fell briefly in the hallways of the US Capitol, raising fresh concerns about his health. After being assisted by aides and a Capitol Police officer, the Kentucky Republican, who has experienced several falls and public “freezing” incidents in recent years, reportedly told reporters he was “fine.”
On his way to the Senate floor for a vote, McConnell was strolling through the Capitol’s basement when he seemed to lose his footing and collapse. In a social media video, he is seen strolling alongside an assistant when a woman approaches him to inquire about his opinion on ICE operations. He fell forward and landed on his side a few moments later, and a police officer and staff member nearby came to his aid right away. Lifted up, McConnell waved to the camera before continuing on toward the Senate, where he is said to have voted on an appropriations bill during a continuing debate over government funding.
This fall adds to a pattern of recent health-related incidents for McConnell. In earlier years, he suffered multiple falls, including one in March 2023 that caused a concussion and fractured rib, and another in December 2024 resulting in minor injuries. He has also been seen freezing during public remarks, including two separate episodes in 2023. These events have raised concerns over his physical stability and capacity to complete his term, though his office consistently describes him as “doing well” and clearing medical evaluations after each incident.
McConnell is recuperating, according to a spokesperson, and was able to return to work right away following the fall. The former Senate Republican leader, who left office in 2024 after serving for 18 years, is still serving in the Senate and intends to retire in January 2027, when his seventh term ends. McConnell still serves in the legislature despite his advanced age and the aftereffects of childhood polio, but there has been ongoing concern about his long-term health and suitability for the position.
McConnell’s team said that although the incident briefly shocked the public and lawmakers, he is in stable condition and carrying out his Senate duties as usual.
